Eucalyptus Public Cloud
We have set up a public Eucalyptus installation that allows users to become familiar with the most current Eucalyptus software without having to install the software on their own system. Currently, the public cloud is available to any user who would like to start VM instances, log into them, test applications inside the instances, and monitor their status. The EPC can also be used in concert with the RightScale cloud platform.
Please, do not use the EPC for anything other than experimentation!
Limitations
Due to the fact that we have limited resources, the Eucalyptus Public Cloud enforces the following limits:
- VM instances are time-limited to 6 hours (they will be terminated without any warning!);
- No more than 4 VM instances from one user are allowed at a time;
- VM instances are assigned public IP addresses, but only incoming network connections and inter-instance network connections are allowed (with the exception of outgoing connections to Debian mirrors - so apt-get will work). This means that you can log in to your VMs from outside, communicate between VM instances, but are not allowed to initiate any connections from a VM instance.
- Maximum number of buckets per user is 1 and the maximum size of that bucket is 5GB.
We realize that this policy limits the utility of our cloud significantly, but we hope that it does not discourage the evaluation of our software. In no way should you expect performance or reliability guarantees from the resources we're providing.
Using the public cloud
Before using the cloud, you'll need to:
- apply for an account here,
- wait for activation email message (which should take at most one business day but may happen within minutes) and log in using the link you received,
- download your credentials here,
- download and install Amazon's client tools.
These steps are described in detail within the Eucalyptus User's Guide. However, the hostname of our cloud front-end is mayhem9.cs.ucsb.edu, which you should use in place of your.cloud.server in the User's Guide.
Once you have successfully completed the application process and your client tools are working, you can use the Eucalyptus Public Cloud. Quick Start section of the User's Guide has a list of commands that you might want to try.
Thanks for trying Eucalyptus!
