Hi,

I'm using the centos image which was downladed from eucalyptus website and trying to create and run a new instance.

Looks like it has problems to boot, when i see the xen console output it says:
---------------
Begin: Waiting for root file system... ...
Done.
Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
---------------

I looked at XEN log file and found out that:
---------------------
[2010-08-09 04:57:50 xend.XendDomainInfo 3417] DEBUG (XendDomainInfo:993) Storing VM details: {'shadow_memory': '0', 'uuid': 'cc28ce26-fcb1-f6ad-d8d1-281248b310b9', 'on_reboot': 'restart', 'start_time': '1281355070.8', 'on_poweroff': 'destroy', 'name': 'i-3673062A', 'xend/restart_count': '0', 'vcpus': '1', 'vcpu_avail': '1', 'memory': '128', 'on_crash': 'destroy', 'image': "(linux (kernel /usr/local/eucalyptus//admin/i-3673062A/kernel) (ramdisk /usr/local/eucalyptus//admin/i-3673062A/ramdisk) (root /dev/sda1) (args ' ro'))", 'maxmem': '128'}
--------------

from this log, i can see that it attches /dev/sda1 as root ... but shouldn't it be: usr/local/eucalyptus//admin/i-3673062A/root ??

Thanks

Hello,

/dev/sda1 is what the instance will see as root device. In your case it looks like the image is not finding the root file systems: a bit before that message, you should see some block device: you should check that indeed is sda and that there are at least 3 partitions.

Thats what I have

The root disk is at:
/usr/local/eucalyptus/admin/i-3673062A/root
and i can mount it as a loop device.

That's the messages when the guest machine starts up:

Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
- Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
- Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
- Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
- Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/sda1 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

Try on Xen

First try to boot the same image with same kernel (eri) on the Xen machine, before experimenting with eucalyptus. My take is that this has nothing to do with eucalyptus as you can't tweek any cmd params.

Hello,

I am having the same problem using KVM and the stock ubuntu image. Are there any workarounds? Some of my custom images seem to be immune to the problem.

Thanks

Hello,

do you have /dev/sda* on your host machine? If not. can you create them and try again? I think that xen requires the devices to be present even though the host is not using them.

Hello,

I don't think you are having the same problem since the problem of the OP was a Xen hypervisor issue. Would you mind to start a new thread?
