Hello, you are talking of

Hello,

you are talking of instance in the ECC right? Did you euca-authorize port 22 for your security group?

Cannot open SSH connection to VM

I also get a connection timed out error when attempting to log in to a VM instance that I have started in the ECC:

desktop:/vmImages$ ssh -i comkey.private root@173.205.188.136
ssh: connect to host 173.205.188.136 port 22: Connection timed out

At the end of the VM console output, after the key sequences, some error statement seems to be repeated between short intervals:

I used the Centos 5.3 image (emi-9ACB1363) registered by admin, but I get the connection timed out error when attempting to log in to instances created from other images as well. I started the VM by running euca-run-instances -t c1.medium -k comkey emi-9ACB1363.

Before attempting to log in, I have run euca-authorize default -p 22 and euca-authorize default -p 80.

This issue is still

This issue is still preventing me from experimenting with the ECC. I have also tried a 32-bit Fedora 11 disk image, which is the same as the one at the Eucalyptus site except that its size has been doubled. With this image, the VM boots successfully to the login prompt, although some error messages are printed:

Fedora release 11 (Leonidas)
Kernel 2.6.28-11-generic on an x86_64 (/dev/ttyS0)
localhost login:

However, when I attempt to SSH to the instance I get the same connection timed out error. Also pinging the IP address of the instance fails with a 100% packet loss. Could anyone please suggest what could be causing this problem?

I am wondering if the default ram disk and kernel images should work with all custom disk images, such as the 32-bit Fedora disk image?

Hello,

what does euca-describe-groups returns? Did you enable ssh?

Hello, here is the output

Hello,

here is the output from euca-describe-groups: GROUP kre default default group.

I have run euca-authorize default -p 22 and euca-authorize default -p 80. In addition, the output from euca-get-console-output command contains the line Starting sshd: [ OK ], so I think SSH should be enabled.

However, right now I cannot get the 32-bit Fedora images to boot to the login prompt. It seems that the instances cannot find their root file systems, and they drop to a shell. The 64-bit Centos-image starts printing the line INIT: Id "xvc0" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes after start-up, and the console output does not contain the login prompt. Perhaps this is preventing SSH connections?

Thank you.

Hello, if what you posted is

Hello,

if what you posted is the output of euca-describe-groups, you don't have any rules to allow any connection to be made to the instance. Please refer to our user's guide for instructions on how to do so (in short you need to use euca-authorize -P tcp -p 22 -s 0.0.0.0/0 default).

You can ignore the xvc0 respawing error: it's harmless.

Hello, Thank you for your

Hello,

Thank you for your reply. I have now added rules to allow TCP and ICMP protocols. Here is the new output from euca-describe-groups:

$ euca-describe-groups
GROUP kre default default group
PERMISSION kre default ALLOWS tcp 22 22 FROM CIDR 0.0.0.0/0
PERMISSION kre default ALLOWS icmp 22 22 FROM CIDR 0.0.0.0/0
PERMISSION kre default ALLOWS icmp 0 0 FROM CIDR 0.0.0.0/0
PERMISSION kre default ALLOWS icmp -1 -1 FROM CIDR 0.0.0.0/0

However, now I get a different error message when attempting to open an SSH connection to the instance:

$ ssh -i comkey.ppk -v root@173.205.188.152OpenSSH_5.3p1 Debian-3ubuntu4, OpenSSL 0.9.8k 25 Mar 2009

debug1: connect to address 173.205.188.152 port 22: No route to host
ssh: connect to host 173.205.188.152 port 22: No route to host

Also pinging the instance seems to fail:

$ ping -c 3 173.205.188.152
PING 173.205.188.152 (173.205.188.152) 56(84) bytes of data.

I think the current authorization rules should allow both SSH connections and pinging. Could someone suggest why they are still failing? Thank you.

Hello,

I'm not quite sure what happened there: I noticed your instance not been responsive and we are investigating. Can you try again and let us know if you see issues?

Hello,

now I am able to ping the instance; all packets are received. However, I cannot log in to the instance. It seems that the instance does not accept the key and requires a password instead:

Hello,

I'm not seeing anything unsual from this side, so I have to assume that, for whatever reason, there is some issue with your private key. Can you try to recreate a keypair and try again?

Hi, I'm facing the same

Hi,

I'm facing the same problem. I have already done most of what's mentioned in this post. I can ping the VM, I also can see that port 22 is opened using Nmap. I've added the group permission. And my euca-describe-groups shows:

$ euca-describe-groups
PERMISSION admin default ALLOWS tcp 22 22 FROM CIDR 0.0.0.0/0

And I have created 3 private keys.

When I try to SSH this is what I get:

$ ssh -v -i keyp.pem root@192.168.0.123
OpenSSH_5.8p1 Debian-1ubuntu3, OpenSSL 0.9.8o 01 Jun 2010
debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config
debug1: Applying options for *
debug1: Connecting to 192.168.0.123 [192.168.0.123] port 22.
debug1: Connection established.
debug1: identity file keyp.pem type -1
debug1: identity file keyp.pem-cert type -1
debug1: Remote protocol version 2.0, remote software version OpenSSH_5.3p1 Debian-3ubuntu3
debug1: match: OpenSSH_5.3p1 Debian-3ubuntu3 pat OpenSSH*
debug1: Enabling compatibility mode for protocol 2.0
debug1: Local version string SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_5.8p1 Debian-1ubuntu3
debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEXINIT sent
Read from socket failed: Connection reset by peer

I did ssh -v -i keyp.pem admin@192.168.0.123 and ssh -v -i keyp.pem 192.168.0.123 but getting the same error.

Any idea what I'm missing?

Thanks
