Eucalyptus FastStart gets Eucalyptus installed fast!

Posted: Friday 17th of June 2011 02:38:01 PM By David Kavanagh

Eucalyptus has always had some pretty complete documentation for installation. We support a variety of linux distributions and an even larger variety of network and component configurations. Quite frankly, it can be a little overwhelming, especially for the new user.

When I first joined the company last fall, I thought that there must be an easier way. Luckily enough, I was tasked with building a focused installer that would allow people to install Eucalyptus quickly and easily. The goal was to start with a few simplifying assumptions and automate, automate, automate! We picked the most common OS we see users choosing (CentOS), hypervisor (XEN) and a flexible network mode for POCs (MANAGED_NOVLAN).

Introducing the Eucalyptus/Puppet Integration Kit

Puppet has emerged as a useful continuous configuration management tool. It can not only automate initial install and configuration of software, but also manage the state of machines during their life-cycle. We're hearing a lot of demand for Puppet from our customers and so we’re going to help people who want to integrate Puppet with their Eucalyptus cloud.

We talk about two use cases, managing eucalyptus physical nodes and managing hosted nodes (instances). For the former, we’re providing scripts that help get you started. For your own application stack, I recommend starting with the Module Forge at PuppetLabs. There is also a vibrant community of puppet users as well as detailed documentation at puppetlabs.com.
